We are so excited to share photos from our recent vacation! We were hired to shoot Stephanie & Lucas’s wedding on Sunday, September 16th so we decided to take advantage of the opportunity and make it a family vacation. We flew into Denver on Thursday and drove right up to Estes Park. That evening we took a short hike around Lily Lake and we were immediately blown away by the beauty! The aspen trees were at their peak golden color and the lake was so peaceful. We went into town that evening but it was too late to do much. We saw enough to know that Estes Park is an adorable little town that we hope to return to one day.
The next day we woke up early to make our way into the Rockies. First we stopped by a park that we thought would be a nice elk hangout and it was! It was crazy to be so close to them but don’t worry, we stayed close to the car and kept a respectable distance with our zoom lenses. :) We drove through Rocky Mountain National Park and again…minds blown. The landscape is so incredibly different from anything in Kentucky. The vastness of the area is so amazing and we had the best time. It was tricky dressing for the weather because it was in the 30s and 40s in the morning; 70s during the heat of the day. And in the alpine zone of the Rockies, it got down into the 30s again! We saw a herd of elk hanging out in one of the prettiest valleys which you’ll see below.
After we made it through the Rockies we went to have lunch in Grand Lake. Grand Lake was another lovely little town. The lake is so pristine and the mountains in the distance are so beautiful. Grand Lake has several little shops and restaurants and it appears that there are many places to stay the night. We ended up going on a little further to Granby. Granby was a pretty place too but not a lot to do! But, we stayed in a nice Airbnb condo and got up early the next day to head to Steamboat Springs. That morning we were fortunate enough to see a large moose, the only one of the trip.
The drive from Granby to Steamboat Springs was very interesting! Beautiful country again but this time we were driving through an area that was smoky from nearby Silvercreek wildfires. We worried a little that Steamboat would end up smoky or that we would have to take a major detour if the main highway was shut down.
This first part of our trip was so much fun and we immediately fell in love with Colorado! If you have any questions about our itinerary or where we stayed, feel free to comment below and we’ll help out as much as possible! Soon we will share Part 2: Steamboat Springs!
